Gray Stone women win vital game at North Moore, 62-59

The Gray Stone women’s basketball team moved into sole possession of second place in the Yadkin Valley Conference with a 62-59 win Friday at North Moore.

Danielle Werts led the Knights (10-4, 6-2 YVC) with 23 points, including 15 in a fourth quarter in which she connected on 8-of-9 free throws.

Secorra Medley also reached double figures for Gray Stone with 12.

Alexus McCrimmon led three in double figures for the Mustangs (10-5, 5-3) with 21.

Friday’s game was tied at 27 at halftime. Then Gray Stone found itself down by 50-36 after three quarters. Through the first three quarters, the Mustangs made 10 3-pointers in the contest.

“You wait for a moment in the season when your team steps up and owns their identity,” Gray Stone coach Robert Stack said about the fourth quarter. Gray Stone played “shut down defense” in the period, Stack said, while outscoring the Mustangs 26-9 in the period.

The win for the Knights puts Gray Stone two games behind Albemarle for first place in the conference standings.

Gray Stone has three games this week. The Knights host West Montgomery on Tuesday night then go out of YVC play Wednesday for a game at Christ the King in Concord. Gray Stone will then play at South Stanly on Friday night.
