James “Sonny” Lafayette Hartsell Jr., 64, of Locust, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2019 at Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast in Concord.

Sonny was born November 22, 1954 in Mecklenburg County to the late James Lafayette Hartsell Sr. and the late Betty Jean Furr Hartsell.

He was also preceded in death by son, Wesley Wilson Hartsell.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, April 1, 2019 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Midland. The funeral service will be on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Locust, and will be officiated by Rev. Dr. Tommy Ross, Jr., and Rev. Dr. Kinney Wallace. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Survivors include wife, Betty Ruth Hartsell of Locust; son, James “Jay” L. (Heather) Hartsell III of Stanfield; Grant A. (Erin) Hartsell of Locust; seven grandchildren, Josie, Bella, Kelton, Lucas, Avery, Adelyn, and Anden.
