Stanly Football Friday Preview: Four teams open at home

Thomasville at Albemarle
When: Friday, August 23, 7:30 PM
Series Record: 28-9 Thomasville
Last Meeting: 2018 (Thom. 8-0)
Notes: Last season, the two Bulldogs squads met at Cushwa Stadium where the teams played to a stalemate until the final minutes.
Thomasville returns starters in QB Landon Johnson (1,018 yds., 4 TD) and RB Javon Cunningham (1,254 yds., 13 TD). The team was 8-4 last year, losing to West Stanly in the 2AA state playoffs.

East Rowan at North Stanly
When: Friday, August 23, 7:30 PM
Series Record: 18-6 East Rowan
Last Meeting: 2018 (ER 27-21)
Notes: The Mustangs have won the last three matchups in the series against the Comets.
East Rowan returns most of the team’s front five along with running back Sammy Pinckney and quarterback Logan Forbis from last season’s lineup which went 6-6 overall and 3-2 in the 3A North Piedmont Conference.

Southwestern Randolph at South Stanly
When: Friday, August 23, 7:30 PM
Series Record: 8-4 South Stanly
Last Meeting: 1998 (SS 46-0)
Notes: The Cougars were 2-9 last year with wins over Providence Grove and Trinity but did not post a victory in the 3A Mid-Piedmont Conference.
In scrimmages in the preseason, the Cougars used a lot of four wideout formations with one back and the QB in the pistol set.

Piedmont at West Stanly
When: Friday, August 23, 7:30 PM
Series Record: W. Stanly 31-23
Last Meeting: 2016 (Pied. 35-6)
Notes: The Panthers have a new coach in John Castator after going 2-9 last season and 0-7 in the 3A Southern Caroalina Conference.
Piedmont returns senior RB Cody Purser (1,228 yds, 13 TD) along with two top tacklers in defensive backs Harrison Davis and Brooks Gsell.
