In varsity football games Oct. 11, West Stanly had a chance to make school history while Albemarle and North Stanly faced key conference match-ups.

West Stanly 49, Forest Hills 21
For the first time in the school’s 58 seasons of football, the Colts are 6-0 after a big Rocky River Conference road win at the Jackets (3-4, 0-1 RRC).

“It’s great being 6-0,” West head coach Brett Morton said. “The guys are working very hard. The job’s not done yet.”

Jordan Poole, Jordan Manshack, Logan Little and Gavin Hudson all scored TDs in the game for the Colts (6-0, 1-0 RRC).

West Stanly can claim the 2019 Stanly Cup with a home win Friday over South Stanly.

North Rowan 36, Albemarle 33
A wild finish at the Bulldogs’ home stadium saw the Bulldogs come within a hair of upsetting the Cavaliers at home.

Leading 33-30 in the final two minutes of the game, Albemarle (2-5, 2-1 YVC) had a bad snap on an offensive play on fourth down over the head of quarterback Antonio Burns.

Burns turned and kicked the ball out of bounds. Instead of a safety, Albemarle was flagged for illegal kicking of the ball, a 10-yard penalty which was also assessed with a loss of down, giving the Cavaliers (4-3, 3-0 YVC) the ball on the Albemarle 15-yard line.

According to the National Federation of High School football rules, the penalty does not include loss of down.

Malcolm Wilson Jr. later scored a touchdown in the final 40 seconds to give the win to the visiting Cavaliers.

Albemarle travels to North Stanly Friday night.

North Stanly 49, South Davidson 0
The Comets stayed perfect in conference play with a shutout win at the Wildcats.

Christian Barbee scored three TDs for the Comets while Joseph Benfield added rushing and receiving scores. Kyree Dykes and Clayton Shue also scored for the Comets (3-4, 2-0 YVC).
