Tuesday night, the Gray Stone women’s basketball team continued its undefeated start to the season rallying from an early deficit to win at Chatham Central, 50-40.

Danielle Werts led the Knights (11-9, 7-0 YVC) with 16 points while Seccora Medley added 14 points. Olivia Payne just missed double figures finishing with nine points.

Mary Grace Murchison was top scorer in the game and for the Bears (6-9, 4-4) with 19 points.

Gray Stone started slow on the road playing in the team’s first game in nine days, falling behind early after one quarter, 14-7.

Werts and Payne combined for nine points behind the arc in the second quarter getting the Knights to within five at halftime, 25-20.

The second half saw the Knights’ defense clamp down on Chatham as Gray Stone outscored the Bears 15-6 in the third quarter to lead, 35-31.

Gray Stone hit 7-of-9 foul shots down the stretch to earn the victory.

“We didn’t play four quarters tonight, but you have to credit Chatham and Coach Burke as they came out and played well,” Gray Stone head coach Robert Stack said.

“Fortunately we were able to have a strong second half and we enjoy the win and move on.”

After Wednesday’s non-conference game at West Stanly, the Knights return home Friday to host South Stanly.
