West Stanly opened the 2020-21 basketball season Tuesday night at home taking on cross-county rival North Stanly.

Three players scored in double figures for the Colts to lift the hosts to a 61-52 win over the Comets.

Austin Medlin led the Colts (1-0) with 19 points, hitting 7-of-14 from the field, while Jake Bartell added 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Tayshawn Haywood knocked down a pair of threes and added 10 points for West while Jordan Manshack led the Colts with six assists.

Dyson Bell was top scorer for North (0-1) with 15 points, with Doug Smith adding 14 points including hitting 7-of-9 at the foul line.

“North did a good job taking us out of some of the things we want to do offensively,” West head coach John Thompson said. “We have to do a better job rebounding; they were tougher than us on the boards at times.”

Thompson added Bartell was “fantastic…he did a little bit of everything: scoring, rebounding and distributing.

The coach added Manshack “did a great job at the point making the right play and not turning it over.”
