The South Stanly men’s cross-country team ran Saturday in the 1A state championship meet at Ivey Redmon Park in Kernersville.

South Stanly improved from 12th place in the state last season to finish fifth overall at this year’s state meet.

Davis Wright, a sophomore, was the top place for the Bulls earning All-State honors by finishing sixth overall in a time of 17:29. Sophomore Ranfere Garcia was second for South Stanly and 13th overall in 18:01, followed on the team by sophomore Jayden Oliver (47th-19:08), freshman Josh Huneycutt (62nd-19:57) and sophomore Mason Huneycutt (68th-20:12).

“This has been the hardest working group of boys I have ever coached,” head coach Michael Curlee said. “After making it to states last year, they realized the potential they had to do it again. This gave them a drive to push themselves. They have a goal of winning states by their senior year…each day they come ready and willing to work hard.”

Lincoln Charter won the state title with a low score of 55, followed by the Community School of Davidson (112), Murphy (116), Bishop McGuinness (127) and South Stanly (151).

Aaron Rovnak of Lincoln Charter won the individual state title finishing in 16:47.
