West Stanly cross-country runs at state meet

The West Stanly Colts cross-country programs competed last Friday afternoon in the NCHSAA 2A state championship meet at the Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville.

West Stanly’s women’s team finished seventh in the team standings, placing one runner in the top 10, while one Colt competed as an individual on the men’s side.

Junior Natalie Almond was the top finisher for the Colts in 11th place with a time of 20:08. Savanah Hendzel was second for West Stanly and 34th overall finishing in 21:55, followed on the team by Makayla Morton (48th-23:07), Holly Hatch (60th-23:56) and Laney McCollum (64th-24:05).

As a team, West finished seventh with 165 points. North Lincoln won the state title with the low score of 42, followed by Lake Norman Charter (62) and Carrboro (84).

West Stanly men’s cross-country runner James Shue, a junior, finished 31st overall with a time of 17:39. Walter Sellers of Atkins won the 2A individual title with a time of 15:40.
