Over the weekend, officers from the Oakboro Police Department conducted a traffic stop which led to a stolen firearm being confiscated.

Sgt. David Daigle and Cpl. Matthew Howard received a call from communications to go on a reckless driving call, locating the car just off N.C. Highway 205 near Branch Road.

Officers noticed the odor of marijuana from the car, which police say the driver, Robert James Colson, admitted he had smoked recently. Upon exiting the car, a bud of marijuana fell out of his pants. He was later found to have a bag of marijuana on his person.

Further investigation by the officers found a stolen firearm, a semi-automatic .45 caliber Taurus, and ammunition for the gun.

Charges included felony possession of a stolen firearm, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and traffic charges of driving while license revoked and driving left of the centerline.

Colson was transported to the Stanly County Jail and placed under a secure bond.
