Pfeiffer men win in OT over Southern Virginia; Savoy named Player of the Week

Southern Virginia University forced overtime with a late three-pointer, but Pfeiffer outscored the Knights 20-6 in the extra frame to take a 115-101 USA South win on Saturday afternoon.

Pfeiffer (4-2, 1-0 USA South) allowed SVU to come back after leading 82-75 at 6:18 of the second half after senior Jerome Savoy converted a three-point play.

SVU made their move in the waning stages of regulation, closing to 92-90 on a three-pointer by Conner Marchant with 1:12 left.

The Knights tied the game, 92-92, before Falcon senior Craig Sabb (Goose Creek, S.C.) converted a trio of free throws after being fouled with 17 seconds remaining to lead 95-92.

Marchant then tied the game at 95 with another three pointer to send the game to overtime.

In the extra frame, Pfeiffer fell behind 97-95, but responded with a 12-0 run to make it 107-97, capped by a Sean Scott (Waldorf, Md.) layup at 1:54.

SVU would get no closer the rest of the way, with Pfeiffer taking the 115-101 win.

Savoy led Pfeiffer with 29 points while Sabb, Scott and Donnie Haith (Aberdeen, N.C.) each had 17 points in the win. Savoy, Dorian Miles (Greenville, S.C.) and Jordan Byrd (Mebane, N.C.) each had seven rebounds in the win.

SVU got a game-high 33 points from Marchant in the loss.

Pfeiffer will take a break for final exams and for the holidays, with their next game coming Dec. 30 at 7:00 p.m. at ODAC opponent, Guilford College.

Savoy Named USA South Player of the Week

Pfeiffer University senior Jerome Savoy was tabbed as the USA South Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league recently announced.

Savoy, from Waldorf, Md., scored 29 points in the lone game of the week last week, a 115-101 overtime USA South road win at Southern Virginia.  Savoy went 8-of-13 from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 from beyond the arc against the Knights.

He also was an efficient 11-of-12 from the free throw line and brought down seven rebounds along with teammates Dorian Miles (Greenville, S.C.) and Jordan Byrd (Mebane, N.C.).

Savoy is currently averaging 17.3 points per game, which ranks him eighth in the USA South. He also ranks eighth in free throw percentage (83.8%), fifth in three-pointers made (17) and second in three-point percentage (60.7%).

In the NCAA Division III rankings, he currently ranks third in three-point percentage (60.7%) with a minimum of 2.5 makes per game.

Savoy also stretched his streak of double-figure scoring games to seven straight in the win over SVU.
