The North Stanly women’s basketball team had a long winning streak last season in going 20-3 for first-year head coach Regan Allen-Perry.

North lost the first game last season and then won 17 in a row, but the Comets look to improve on that mark this season.

The Comets have jumped out to an 8-0 record and have been beating opponents by an average of 23.1 points per game. North is averaging 55 points through the first eight games and allowing 31.1 points on defense.

North has benefited from the play of two of its starters in the front court. Sophomore Shalyn Bell leads the team with 17.5 points and 14 rebounds per game, while fellow forward senior Paris Bennett also averages a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds per game.

Junior point guard Gia Dunlap drives the North offense, leading the Comets with 5.3 assists per game.

One new addition to the lineup is freshman Alexandria Brown, who is third on the team in scoring 8.5 points per game.

North has two non-conference games this week, traveling to Montgomery Central Tuesday and hosting Anson County Wednesday.

The Comets will play in the West Stanly women’s basketball holiday tournament slated for Dec. 26-28.
