Badin’s town council passed a new ordinance regarding a situation involving a local eatery at the council’s meeting this month.

With a 5-0 vote, the council approved a new sidewalk cafe ordinance which would allow alcoholic beverages in designated areas.

Badin Town Manager Jay Almond said the council has had previous discussions about finding ways for restaurants to permit transportation of beverages from one part of the business to another when walking on a public sidewalk.

Referring to Loafers and Legends on Falls Road, Almond said the board had considered creating a social district, but wanted to find another way for the town to fix the problem.

Mayor Gary Lowder asked if the new ordinance would be enforced by permit. Almond said it would.

Almond said other locations could also apply for the permit.

When the mayor asked about having public hearings regarding approval of permits, Almond said it would be prudent to have them, adding any situation involving alcohol “is always one of them.”
