As Mayberry Deputy Barney Fife might say, something big is happening in Albemarle.
Real big.
Bigger than big.
Big Truck Day will return to the Stanly County History Center 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 24 during the next Social Saturday in downtown Albemarle.
Half of North 2nd Street from Courthouse Square to The Residences at the Albemarle Hotel will be closed for visitors to explore the vehicles.
The first event happened last August. Stanly County Museum Manager Megan Sullivan said it may become an annual event.
“We had such a great turn out with the first one and I was asked repeatedly if we would do it again,” she said. “It is nice to be able to offer free events for our community.”
Sullivan came up with the concept while getting ready for the grand opening of the Smithsonian exhibit collaboration.
“Stanly County is home to a lot of companies who utilize these large vehicles and it seemed like a nice way to recognize them and show off what they do,” she said. “The museum is a good host because we are a place for the community to come together. We offer numerous other programs and events for the community and we are here to be a community resource.”
Sullivan feels children, of all ages, like big trucks “because there is something just awe-inspiring about them.”
“First of all, they are just huge, plus it’s amazing what these trucks can do,” she said.
Vehicles, subject to availability, may include fire trucks, an ambulance, a wrecker, tractors, law enforcement cars and others.
