Stanly’s new livestock arena continues to approach completion as commissioners approved a new position at Monday’s meeting.

County Manager Andy Lucas expressed his excitement about the 10-year project coming to a culmination to commissioners at the meeting.

Lucas said the arena should be open by late April or early May and recommended the board approve a new position of events facilities and operations director. This position would oversee operations of the livestock arena and the Agri-Civic Center.

The previous position of director of the Agri-Civic Center will be reclassified as an events facilities coordinator and the previous administrative specialist for the Ag Center would report directly to the director in the new position.

Lucas said the move was to “create synergy between the two facilities and really market this as an events complex.”

In an email following the meeting, Lucas further clarified the new position and duties.

“This position will direct and oversee all facilities at the existing Agri-Civic Center site (to include the new Livestock Arena).  This will help to ensure there is operational and staffing coordination, collaborative procurement, enhanced marketing, etc. as it relates to both facilities,” Lucas wrote. “The incumbent Agri-Civic Center director has the opportunity to apply and compete for this new position.”
