Four moms from Stanly County are on a mission to fight cystic fibrosis.

On April 27, Stanfield residents Megan Edwards, Leah Dennis and Courtney Lisk and Jessica Honeycutt of Oakboro will participate in the Xtreme Hike to support individuals battling cystic fibrosis, a disease which affects the lungs, pancreas and other organs.

The moms make up Team Teddy, which hikes for Dennis’ 7-year-old nephew Teddy, who was born with cystic fibrosis.

This will be Dennis’ third Xtreme Hike and the first for the others.

The team must raise $12,000 before the hike, which will be a 30.1-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail through Tennessee and North Carolina. As of Wednesday, the team was within less than $2,000 of the goal.

“We are preparing through individual trainings and organized training hikes,” Edwards said.

The moms recently completed a 14.7-mile training hike on the Appalachian Trail on a rainy, windy and cold Saturday. Another weekend, three of them completed a 16-mile hike at Crowders Mountain. The team has around 700 miles logged as part of training.

“Leah recruited us to join the Xtreme Hike for Team Teddy. We all live in the West Stanly area, but did not grow up together,” Edwards said. We all became friends through our neighborhood and our own kid’s involvement in sports. We have 11 kids between the four of us, ranging from ages 3 to 11.”
