Meredith Simpson

Meredith Simpson of New London, daughter of Brian and Crystal Simpson, was awarded $1,000 to further her education. She is enrolled as a student at NC State University. She is studying Animal Science and Poultry Science, hoping to minor in Extension Education. This summer she did an internship at the N.C. Extension Office at the Ag-Center in Albemarle.

While a student at NC State she has been on the dean’s list and is active in the Poultry Science Club.

Gabriel Burleson of Albemarle, son of Angie and Rick Scaffe, also received a $1,000 scholarship. He is a 2022 graduate of North Stanly High School. He is attending Sandhills Community College, where he plans to major in landscaping and gardening.

Gabriel Burleson

He has plans to be active in his community and to improve the overall appearance of the local business community with his landscaping business.

The Betty Watson Scholarship is a memorial scholarship established in 1979 honoring the work of Betty Watson, former home economist and extension agent.

Applicants majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences or related areas are given preference when selecting scholarship winner(s). Graduates of our local high schools and students from Stanly County in college are eligible to apply.

The awards committee found these two persons to exhibit academic scholarship, initiative, character and leadership ability.
