School Board approves road development

The Stanly County School Board unanimously approved a motion to create a four-lane extension to Millingport Elementary School to help reduce afternoon traffic during a special called meeting Monday evening.

The plans were first presented by Todd Bowers, SCS director of facilities maintenance, during a facilities committee meeting last week.

The four-way extension would be added onto the current two-way road into the school and would cost approximately $60,000. The four lanes would then flow into a single lane for parents to pick up the students.

Bowers said around 75 to 80 cars would be able to be stacked in the four lanes during school pick-up.

He said the issue has been brought to his attention for the first time this year, mainly due to Millingport being a late-start school.

The money will come out of the school system’s capital fund.

The paving contractor, C. K. Earnhardt & Son, Inc. of Albemarle, will start working on the project as soon as possible, Bowers said.
