Oakboro organizes county graduation parade

A town known for celebrating holidays in big style with parades has found a way to honor the graduating high school class of 2020.

Police Chief T.J. Smith and Fire Chief Chip Osborne announced this week the intentions of  Oakboro Police Department and Oakboro Volunteer Fire Department of hosting the Stanly County Graduation Parade at 10 a.m. June 6.

Seniors are asked to meet at 320 N. College St. in Oakboro at 8:30 a.m. to line up driving their cars, trucks or tractors or riding horses down Main Street.

Smith said seniors are encouraged to be as creative as they want to be. Each graduate will be placed with their respective high schools. Grads may also wear their caps and gowns if they choose.

Seniors are also encouraged to invite family and other members of the neighborhood to line the parade route to cheer and support the graduates.

Stanly County Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeff James commented on the scheduled parade.

“We appreciate any community event our students have an opportunity to participate in,” James said.
