STANLY FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: North, Albemarle open conference play

In varsity football games Friday night, North Stanly was at Union Academy while Albemarle traveled to Jay M. Robinson.

The Comets added another mark to one record its head coach, Scott Crisco, has set in his seven seasons as North’s head coach.

North Stanly shut out Union Academy 49-0 on the road Friday night, the 19th shutout in Crisco’s tenure with the Comets.

Friday’s win for North was the fifth in a row against Union Academy making the Comets 8-2 lifetime versus the Cardinals (0-7, 0-2 YVC).

The Comets (2-3, 1-0 YVC) scored in the first minute with a 66-yard touchdown pass from Luke Shaver.

Shaver added a 36-yard touchdown pass to Luke Hatley two minutes later for a 14-0 advantage.

After Josh Lucas recovered a fumble late in the first quarter, Shaver found Stefan Harris for a seven-yard TD pass.

North’s defense then recovered a fumble in the end zone with 4:50 left in the first quarter for a 28-0 advantage.

The Comets’ defense almost created more points in the first quarter, but a 58-yard pick-six was called back on a penalty.

Union Academy got inside the North 10-yard line with some penalties late in the first period. However, Harris, playing safety, intercepted a Cardinals pass and returned the ball 96 yards for a touchdown and a 35-0 lead.

The Comets scored twice more in the second period, starting with a 25-yard TD run from Cam Smith.

Harris added a 44-yard interception return for a touchdown and a 49-0 advantage.

North faces one of the other 2A schools in the YVC Friday when the Comets host Jay M. Robinson (5-1, 1-0 YVC).

Robinson 66, Albemarle 0

Friday’s game between two teams with Bulldogs as their mascots met for the first time on the gridiron.

Robinson jumped out to a fast lead and posted the second-most points ever allowed by an Albemarle team in a 66-0 loss.

The shutout was the third time this season Albemarle (0-5, 0-1 YVC) has been shutout.

Albemarle goes on the road Friday night to play at South Stanly (1-4, 0-1 YVC), who lost at Mount Pleasant 44-0.
