Stanly County golfers have strong showing in state championships

Stanly County had quite a showing in the 1A men’s golf state championship at Pinehurst No. 6.

South Stanly’s Reid Smith finished third with a seven over par score of 151 for the May 15-16 rounds.

Wyatt Reeder of Gray Stone finished tied for fourth with a nine over par score of 153.

Dustin Hurley of South Stanly finished 12th, shooting a 17 over par at 161 for the two days.

Gray Stone’s Jacob Trainor finished tied for 17th with a 21 over par at 165.

In the team championship, it was a reversal of last year’s final as the South Stanly team finished second overall with an 80 over par to the team from Mitchell, the school South defeated to claim the title in 2022.
Mitchell finished this year’s 36 holes with a 60 over par.

South’s Smith also won the North Carolina Farm Bureau sportsmanship award in the 1A.

In the 2A men’s golf state championship, West Stanly’s Ryan Collins finished tied for 13th with an eight over par, hitting 152 for the two rounds at Longleaf Golf & Family Club in Southern Pines.
