NAACP reveals speaker for Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Prayer Breakfast

A birthday breakfast tribute marking what would have been the 95th birthday of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be held in the multipurpose room of the E.E. Waddell Community Center at 9 a.m. Jan. 13.

The 21st Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Prayer Breakfast will have a theme of “Normalcy … Never again.”

“As the local branch of the NAACP continue addressing needs of the community to help ensure a great quality of life for all, we are excited as an organization in this new year as we make plans with some new goals and initiatives that we believe will strengthen and unify our local community in a manner will help us to remember Dr. King’s infamous dream of equality and justice and to encourage others to get involved and assist in working to make his dream a reality,” event chairperson Dexter Townsend said.

Keynote speaker for this event will be Dr. Reginald Boyd Jr., who serves as the senior pastor at Union Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Albemarle.

Boyd entered the ministry in August 1999 at Little Rock A.M.E. Zion Church in Charlotte. He obtained his doctorate from Hood Theological Seminary in Salisbury in May 2014.

“As in years past we are anticipating on a capacity filled crowd and would strongly encourage if possible to purchase tickets in advance,” added Townsend, who is also an Albemarle councilman.

Tickets are available for $25 each by contacting any member of the local NAACP or can be purchased at the EEWC in advance. Churches and businesses interested in reserving a table should contact Townsend at 704-550-7065 or Brenda Stanback at 704-965-1294.
