PEEKING INTO THE PAST – Morrow Mountain Cabins

During the mid-1930s, the state of North Carolina began making plans for the state park in Stanly County which later became Morrow Mountain. The land was donated, and the state began planning the amenities that would be available in the park. One of these ideas was vacation cabins that would be available for visitors to rent. It took 15 years until finally, in the Jan. 17, 1950 edition of the Stanly News & Press, an article stated, “Materials have begun to arrive for the construction of the vacation cabins and it is planned to begin actual construction on these in the near future. There will be six which park officials hope to have in readiness for the 1950 season.” The construction finally began in August. It was not until June 1952 before the cabins were completed and finally available to rent. (Cabin rental this first year was a minimum of one week and no more than two weeks. The cost was $49 per week, along with a $5 damage deposit). {Lewis Bramlett – Stanly County Historical Society}
