Flooding leads to power outages in Stanly

Thousands of Union Power Cooperative customers are without electricity after a transmission structure was damaged by flooding Thursday morning.

Flooding from Rocky River led the ground around a transmission pole to become soft and fall in eastern Cabarrus County, a Union Power spokesperson said. The outage included just over 13,000 customers, though some have been restored as of noon.

It knocked out power to West Stanly Middle School as well as a school in Cabarrus. However, both schools were provided temporary service.

“We have multiple crews and a variety of equipment on site and working to make repairs now,” Jake Thomas, manager of Marketing & Energy Services, said. “However, we expect these repairs to take until this evening to complete.

“We are updating our social media outlets and suggest that our members check those for updates along with our outage map, Web Outage Viewer (union-power.com).”
