SBI investigates missing evidence at Stanly County Sheriff’s Office

The Stanly County Sheriff’s Office is being investigated by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations.

In a phone interview Friday morning, Stanly County Sheriff Jeff Crisco confirmed he has asked the SBI to investigate an incident in his department. The request comes from a mutual agreement between the department and Stanly County District Attorney Lynn Clodfelter, according to Crisco.

Crisco said the investigation pertains to the handling of evidence. He would not go into further specifics of what was being investigated.

“It’s their investigation; it’s not ours,” Crisco said referring to the SBI.

He said he did not know how long the SBI investigation would take, but it could be several weeks “because they are very thorough.”
