Hwy 55 distributes meals to students, others join in cause

Hwy 55 Burgers Shakes & Fries in Albemarle distributed roughly 1,300 meals to students during Spring Break on Monday, according to the restaurant.

Cooking started at 9:45 a.m. and featured five cooks and five servers. The meals consisted of two hot dogs, three packs of Lance crackers and chips; a chicken cheese steak, hot dog and three packs Lance crackers; a little cheeseburger, hot dog and three packs of Lance crackers; and a Taco Bell bean burrito, hot dog and three packs of Lance crackers.

Hwy 55 cooked 1,400 hot dogs, 226 cheeseburgers and 150 chicken cheese steaks on Monday, while Taco Bell distributed 600 bean burritos.

Sites for the week include Albemarle Middle School from 1-2 p.m., Norwood Elementary from 12:15-1:15 p.m., Badin Elementary from 12:30-1:30 p.m., Stanfield Elementary from 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m., Millingport Elementary from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. and the E.E. Waddell Center from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Monday through Friday during Spring Break.

Hwy 55 said that every person that went to one of the six locations received a meal.

Jalapeños in Albemarle will provide meals on Tuesday consisting of rice, ground beef, salsa, chips and cheese. The other option is two hot dogs with three packs of Lance crackers. Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Albemarle will help cook the hot dogs.

Pizza from all three Stanly County Pizza Hut locations will be distributed Wednesday and Friday, while roast beef sandwiches from Arby’s will be the meal for Thursday. Pizza Hut had pledged to donate 150 large slices last week.

As of Monday afternoon, Hwy 55 had raised $20,595. They are also no longer accepting donations.
