Stanly County Sports Hall of Fame tickets on sale

Tickets for this year’s Stanly County Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony can now be purchased at five sites around Stanly County.

The ceremony, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. July 17 at Merner Gymnasium on the Pfeiffer University campus, will honor five of the county’s most successful athletes and coaches.

Inductees include:

● Al Andrew, highly successful and longtime boys’ basketball and baseball coach, and state champion golf coach at Albemarle High;

● T.A. McLendon, Albemarle native, record-setting running back at Albemarle High School and NC State University;

● Shanna Smith, Albemarle native, softball and basketball standout at Albemarle High, and all-ACC softball player at NC State University;

● Greg Speight, two-time state champion softball coach at North and South Stanly high schools and highly successful basketball coach; and

● Quan Sturdivant, all-state football player at West Stanly High and all-ACC football player at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Keynote speaker for the event will be Wes Durham, one of the principal play-by-play voices of ACC football, basketball and baseball. He is the former co-host of the ACC Network show “Packer and Durham” and former radio voice of Georgia Tech and the Atlanta Falcons. He is the son of SCSHOF member and longtime “Voice of the Tarheels,” the late Woody Durham.

Tickets to the event are on sale at Albemarle, Locust and Oakboro city halls and parks and recreation departments, and at Starnes-Bramlett Jewelers and Uwharrie Dash in Albemarle.

Tickets are $35 in advance, and $50 on the day of the event.
