PEEKING INTO THE PAST – West Main Street

Recently the History Center received a fascinating collection of photos of what parts of Albemarle looked like in May 1962.

Today’s picture of West Main Street was taken in front of the Maralise Hotel at the corner of First and Main streets looking east. The left side of the street shows a small portion of Cabarrus Bank & Trust, Rayless Department Store, J.C. Penney, Cato’s Women’s Clothing, Riff’s Department Store, Chic Shop, Glamour Shop, McLellan’s, First National Bank and the Courthouse. The street front businesses that were on the right side at this time were the Carolina Café at the Maralise Hotel, Rose’s, Efird Department Store, Moose’s Clothing, Purcell’s, Merit Shoes, Starnes Jewelry Store, Belk’s, City News and Allen Clothing.

Thank you to Gerald Miller for sharing your wonderful collection of photos.
