North Stanly opens YVC play with shutout win

Since moving to the 1A classification and the Yadkin Valley Conference, the North Stanly football team has consistently beaten one team: South Davidson.

The Comets entered Friday’s home game having beaten South Davidson nine times in a row and were 10-1 lifetime versus the Wildcats.

North kept the win streak alive with a 51-0 win over South Davidson, the Comets’ fifth shutout in a row over the Wildcats.

Defensively, the Comets limited South Davidson (0-3, 0-2) to 67 total net yards, all on the ground, while forcing three fumbles.

North’s offense exploded for 411 total net yards with six rushing touchdowns. Cameron Smith and Christain Barber each scored two rushing touchdowns, with Smith gaining 120 yards on nine carries. Quarterback Luke Shaver and running back Karee Dykes also scored TDs on the ground.

Shaver also threw a touchdown pass to Cooper Hogan in the third quarter which put the Comets up 42-0 and started a running clock for the rest of the game. (Sports Editor’s Note: This paragraph was corrected online to reflect the correct person catching the TD pass.)

North Stanly will travel Friday to Albemarle to take on the Bulldogs (0-1). Albemarle has not played since losing 6-0 on Feb. 26 at Chatham Central. COVID-19 protocols forced the cancellation of the Bulldogs’ games against North Moore and North Rowan.
